The double command 'O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!' launches the second major section of Isaiah with the paradigmatic herald-proclamation. The verb 'bringest good tidings' (mevasseret) is the feminine participle of the root from which 'gospel' (euangelion) is translated in the LXX, making this verse one of the foundational texts for New Testament theology of the gospel as proclamation. The announcement 'Behold your God' is answered in 40:10-11 with the image of God coming as a warrior and as a shepherd — the same dual portrait that structures the New Testament's portrayal of Christ as judge and pastor.
