John 15:2
Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

Study Note
The image of the Vine and the branches, with the Father as vinedresser 'pruning' fruitful branches so they 'may bear more fruit,' blends agricultural realism with theological precision about the means of spiritual growth. The Greek 'kathairei' (prunes/cleanses) is cognate with 'clean' (katharoi) in verse 3, creating a wordplay: pruning and cleansing by the word are the same divine action. The distinction between branches 'in me' that bear no fruit (taken away) and those that do (pruned) has generated centuries of debate about whether true believers can lose salvation or whether fruitless branches were never genuinely united to Christ. Israel's identity as the vine of God (Psalm 80; Isaiah 5) gives the metaphor its covenant background, and Jesus' 'I am the true vine' implicitly replaces Israel as the medium of divine fruitfulness.
