Study Note

The rhetorical questions — 'who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears?' — introduce the messenger of the covenant (verse 1) not with reassurance but with awe-inspiring description of purifying judgment. The two similes — 'like a refiner's fire' and 'like fullers' soap' — present the messenger's work as both destructive of impurities and cleansing of stain, neither of which is comfortable but both of which produce purity. Christian interpretation applied this passage to John the Baptist's preparatory ministry (Matthew 11:10; Luke 1:76) and to Christ's own coming, reading the purification of the Levites (3:3) as a type of the church's sanctification. The verse cautions against sentimental anticipation of divine advent: the coming of God's presence is genuinely refining rather than merely comforting.
