Abiel, also known as Jeiel, Ner, or Abigibeon (or '[re]-founder of Gibeon'), was the father of Kish and grandfather of King Saul.
Abiel, also identified as Jeiel or Ner in different textual traditions, was a Benjaminite and the grandfather of King Saul—father of Kish (Saul's father) and Ner (the father of Abner, Saul's general) (1 Samuel 9:1; 1 Chronicles 8:33; 9:35–36). He is also associated with the refounding or settlement of Gibeon. His family line produced the first king of Israel and the commander of Israel's army, making him a pivotal ancestral figure in the early monarchy. The multiple names for this figure likely reflect variant genealogical traditions preserved in different sources.
