Old Testament

Abital was one of King David's wives and the mother of his son Shephatiah.

Abital was one of the six wives of David listed in connection with the sons born to him during his reign at Hebron, before he became king over all Israel (2 Samuel 3:4; 1 Chronicles 3:3). She was the mother of Shephatiah, David's fifth son. The names and mothers of these six sons are recorded in both Samuel and Chronicles, reflecting the importance of dynastic succession and royal family memory in Israel. Beyond her identification as Shephatiah's mother, no further detail about Abital's background or later life is preserved in the biblical record.
