Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, was an ancestor of Jesus Christ according to Luke's genealogy.
Cainan was an ancestor of Jesus Christ who appears in the genealogy of Luke 3:36 as the son of Arphaxad and the father of Shelah. He is absent from the corresponding Masoretic Hebrew text of Genesis 10–11 and 1 Chronicles 1, but his name appears in the Septuagint (LXX) version of these passages, which Luke appears to have followed. His inclusion is one of the textual variations between the Hebrew and Greek traditions of the antediluvian and post-diluvian genealogies.
