Elasah

Exile > · H0501I
Old Testament

Elasah was a priest who married a foreign woman during the Exile.

Elasah was a priest who had married a foreign woman during the exile and is listed in Ezra 10:22 among the priests who agreed to Ezra's reform and sent away their foreign wives. The willingness of priests to comply with Ezra's demands was particularly significant, since they were expected to model covenantal purity for the community. Elasah represents the earnest, if painful, effort of the priestly community to restore covenant faithfulness after the exile.
