Heth

Patriarchs (Abraham–Joseph) Early Patriarch · H2845
Old Testament

Heth was a son of Canaan and the ancestor of the Hittites, a prominent people group in the ancient Near East.

Heth was a son of Canaan and grandson of Noah, listed in the Table of Nations as the ancestor of the Hittites (Hebrew: Bene-Heth), a major people group of the ancient Near East (Genesis 10:15; 1 Chronicles 1:13). The Hittites appear throughout the patriarchal narratives as inhabitants of Canaan; Abraham purchased the cave of Machpelah from Ephron the Hittite as a burial place (Genesis 23). The biblical Hittites are widely discussed in relation to the great Hittite empire of Anatolia, though the precise relationship between the two groups remains a subject of scholarly inquiry.
