Old Testament

Ishbi-benob, a Philistine giant, was killed by David's warrior Abishai when he threatened David's life.

Ishbi-benob was a Philistine warrior of gigantic stature, described as a descendant of Rapha, a term used in the Old Testament for a class of large warriors (2 Samuel 21:16). He confronted David in battle at Gob with a new sword and intended to kill the aging king, but was himself killed by Abishai son of Zeruiah. This incident led David's men to forbid him from going into battle again, saying 'You shall no longer go out with us to battle, lest you quench the lamp of Israel.' Ishbi-benob represents the class of Philistine champions whose defeat by David's warriors is commemorated in 2 Samuel 21:15–22.
