Kohath, son of Levi, was the ancestor of Moses and Aaron.
Kohath was the second son of Levi and the ancestor of the Kohathite clan of Levites, which included both Moses and Aaron (Genesis 46:11; Exodus 6:16–20). The Kohathites were assigned the most sacred transportation duty in the wilderness: carrying the ark, the table, the lampstand, and the altars covered in blue and scarlet cloth (Numbers 3:29–32; 4:1–20). Later David placed Kohathite descendants at the center of temple music and service, and Heman the singer was a Kohathite (1 Chronicles 6:33–38). The Kohathite lineage thus spans the entire priestly history of Israel from the wilderness to the Solomonic temple.
