Lud

Patriarchs (Abraham–Joseph) Early Patriarch · H3865
Old Testament

Lud, a son of Shem and progenitor of the Lydians.

Lud was a son of Shem and thus a Semitic people, listed in the Table of Nations (Genesis 10:22; 1 Chronicles 1:17). He is traditionally associated with the Lydians of western Asia Minor, whose kingdom became famous under Croesus in the sixth century BC. The prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah both mention Lud in association with Tarshish, Put, and other distant nations known for their archers (Isaiah 66:19; Jeremiah 46:9; Ezekiel 27:10). The Ludim in Ezekiel serve as mercenary soldiers in the Egyptian army.
