Zadok

Divided Kingdom Tribe of Levi · H6659I
Old Testament

Zadok was a high priest who served in Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile.

This Zadok was a high priest in the Aaronite line during the post-exilic period, the son of Ahitub and father of Shallum in the sacerdotal genealogy of 1 Chronicles 6:12 (cf. Ezra 7:2). He is distinguished from the more prominent Zadok who was high priest under David and Solomon and who supported Solomon's succession over Adonijah (1 Kings 1:8, 32–45). The Zadokite priestly line remained dominant throughout the First Temple period and became the foundational priestly family of the Second Temple era.
