Zebulun

Patriarchs (Abraham–Joseph) Tribe of Zebulun · H2074
Old Testament

Zebulun was the tenth son of Jacob, the sixth and last of Leah, and his descendants formed one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Zebulun was the tenth son of Jacob and the sixth son of Leah (Genesis 30:19–20). His name, from a root related to 'honor' or 'dwelling,' reflects Leah's hope that Jacob would honor her for bearing six sons. Jacob's blessing promises that 'Zebulun shall dwell at the shore of the sea; he shall become a haven for ships, and his border shall be at Sidon' (Genesis 49:13), though historically the tribe's territory was inland in lower Galilee rather than on the Mediterranean coast. Isaiah 9:1 pairs Zebulun with Naphtali as regions that will see a great light, fulfilled in Matthew's account of Jesus's ministry centered in Capernaum (Matthew 4:13–16). The judge Elon came from the tribe of Zebulun (Judges 12:11).
