Study Note

'And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months' — the twice-repeated 'was given' (edothē) in verses 5–7 is theologically significant: the beast's authority, speech, and warfare are divinely permitted rather than self-generated, keeping satanic power within the boundaries of divine sovereignty. The forty-two months (equivalent to 1,260 days and 'a time, times, and half a time' in Daniel 7:25 and 12:7) signals a bounded, limited period of tribulation, not an eternal reign. The passage shapes Christian theology's insistence that evil, however terrible, operates within divinely defined limits and will not outlast the purposes of God.
