Nota de Estudo

Study Note

Paul's confidence hymn — 'for I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers...' — culminates Romans 8 with the most comprehensive statement of security in all his letters. The catalog of ten paired contraries (death/life, angels/principalities, present/future, height/depth, and so on) is structured to be exhaustive, leaving no corner of existence from which love could be excluded. The conclusion of verse 39 — 'will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord' — identifies the love as located in Christ, making it as durable as the risen one himself. The passage has functioned in Christian history as the liturgical language of funerals, persecution, and suffering beyond all human remedy.
