Hades
The Greek term for the realm of the dead, corresponding to the Hebrew Sheol. In the New Testament, Jesus used the term in his account of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31), where the rich man suffered torment while Lazarus found comfort. Jesus declared that 'the gates of Hades will not overcome' his church (Matthew 16:18). Revelation 1:18 proclaims Christ holds 'the keys of death and Hades.' Acts 2:27 quotes Psalm 16:10: 'You will not abandon me to the realm of the dead.' Revelation 20:13-14 describes death and Hades giving up their dead for judgment and then being thrown into the lake of fire. Christ has decisively conquered the power of Hades.
