Study Note

Study Note

The sixth beatitude of Revelation — 'blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates' — connects the eschatological access to Eden's tree of life with the purification that the Lamb's blood provides. The image of 'washing robes' draws on 7:14 ('they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb'), making the eschatological access contingent on the atonement rather than on moral achievement. The 'tree of life' returns from Genesis 2-3, where access was blocked after the fall (Genesis 3:24), and from Revelation 22:2, where it stands in the renewed city bearing fruit for the healing of the nations. The verse closes the beatitude series and the book's narrative of creation-fall-redemption-restoration with a picture of covenant renewal as the permanent reversal of the original expulsion.
