1 Corinthians 13:2
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

Study Note
Paul's hyperbolic catalogue of spiritual excellencies without love — prophecy, mystery knowledge, all faith, even mountain-moving faith — all amount to 'nothing' without charity. The intellectual and charismatic gifts named here represent the highest aspirations of the Corinthian church, making the 'nothing' verdict a direct challenge to their existing values. The word 'nothing' (outhen) is the most radical possible devaluation: not merely less than love but completely without value. Augustine's interpretation — 'love, and do what you will' — builds on the same theological priority of love as the form of all genuine virtue. 1 John 4:7-8 grounds this priority in the divine nature: 'God is love,' making love-less action a contradiction of God's character.
