Study Note

The assurance 'this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us' places the certainty of answered prayer on the foundation of alignment with divine will rather than the intensity of human desire. The word 'confidence' (parrēsia, boldness of speech, freedom of access) is used in 1 John to describe the believer's standing both in prayer (5:14) and at the judgment (2:28; 4:17) — indicating that the same freedom of access characterizes both present intercession and eschatological encounter. The qualifier 'according to his will' does not introduce uncertainty but defines the scope of genuine prayer: prayer aligned with God's will is heard with certainty. Romans 8:26-27 develops the same logic: the Spirit prays 'according to God's will' when human prayer falters, ensuring that prayer's ultimate effectiveness rests in divine-human cooperation.
