Study Note

Believers are described as coming to Christ 'as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious' — initiating the extended stone-building metaphor of 2:4-10. The 'living stone' is a deliberate paradox: stones are inert, but Christ is simultaneously the rejected and chosen stone who has life. The citation of Psalm 118:22 ('the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone') that follows grounds this in Israel's psalmic tradition and was among the earliest christological proof-texts in the church. The contrast between human rejection and divine election anticipates 2:9-10's description of believers as a chosen race — they share the same rejection-and-election pattern as the stone on which they are built.
