For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

Study Note
The axiom 'judgment must begin at the house of God' draws on Ezekiel 9:6 ('begin at my sanctuary') — where God's agents of judgment start with the elders at the temple threshold — and applies it to the church's present experience of fiery trial (4:12). The rhetorical question 'if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel?' presents the church's disciplinary suffering as mild compared to the eschatological fate awaiting the gospel-rejecting world. The passage resists the prosperity-gospel assumption that divine favour produces immunity from hardship, instead treating suffering as a purifying divine engagement with the covenant community. Amos 3:2 ('You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities') establishes the same covenantal logic — privilege intensifies accountability rather than eliminating it.
