Peter's instruction to elders — 'shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly' — restates the pastoral ideal through three antitheses: compulsion versus willingness, gain versus eagerness, domineering versus example. The shepherd metaphor carries the weight of the entire biblical tradition of divine shepherding (Psalm 23; Ezekiel 34; John 10), placing human pastoral authority under the model of the 'chief Shepherd' (verse 4). The warning against 'shameful gain' (aischrokerdos) suggests that economic abuse of pastoral position was a recognized temptation in early communities.
