Study Note

The threefold repetition of 'every man' in Paul's summary of his ministry — 'warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus' — emphatically democratises Christian discipleship, rejecting any spiritual elite who alone receive full instruction. The verb 'present' (parastēsomen) carries the forensic image of presenting someone before a judge — here the eschatological tribunal — making the goal of ministry not merely education but eschatological readiness. The qualifier 'in all wisdom' (en pasē sophia) echoes Colossians 1:9's prayer for spiritual wisdom and distinguishes apostolic teaching from the exclusive wisdom-claims of the Colossian 'philosophy' (2:8). The verse became foundational for the Protestant principle of universal catechesis and the Wesleyan doctrine of entire sanctification as a universally available goal.
