Study Note

The declaration 'there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens' opens the famous 'times' poem (3:1-8), one of the most structurally elegant passages in the Hebrew Bible. The poem's 28 paired opposites (seven times four, or four times seven, both symbolic numbers in Hebrew thought) suggest comprehensive coverage of human experience. Within Qohelet's argument, the poem is not an encouragement to seize the moment but evidence of human inability to determine the right time — God alone holds the timing. Pete Seeger's 1959 adaptation 'Turn! Turn! Turn!' (popularized by The Byrds in 1965) made this text one of the most recognizable pieces of biblical poetry in modern culture.
