Study Note
Paul's prayer that God give the Ephesians 'the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him' grounds spiritual knowledge in pneumatological gifting rather than intellectual capacity alone. The prayer (verses 17-19) is trinitarian in structure: addressed to 'the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory,' asking for the Spirit, in order to know Christ's resurrection power. The 'enlightened eyes of your hearts' translates the Hebrew idiom for the faculty of spiritual discernment — the heart as the seat of understanding, not merely emotion. The three petitions that follow (hope of his calling, riches of his glorious inheritance, greatness of his power) mirror the three blessings of 1:3-14, connecting doxology and prayer as responses to the same reality.
