Study Note

'Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.' The phrase 'to the uttermost' (eis to panteles) carries the double sense of 'completely' and 'for all time' — suggesting both the scope and duration of Christ's saving work. The ground of this complete salvation is his perpetual intercessory life: unlike Levitical priests who died and were replaced, the risen Christ maintains an unending priesthood because he lives forever. Romans 8:34 — 'Christ Jesus... maketh intercession for us' — and 1 John 2:1 — 'we have an advocate with the Father' — articulate the same present activity of the ascended Christ.
