Study Note

'For your Maker is your husband, the LORD of hosts is his name; and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called' — the restoration oracle of Isaiah 54 uses the marriage metaphor introduced in Hosea and Jeremiah to frame the return from exile as divine remarriage to an estranged wife. The identification of YHWH as Israel's 'husband' (bo'el, possessive form of ba'al meaning lord/husband) reframes the covenant relationship in terms of the most intimate human bond. The five divine epithets — Maker, LORD of hosts, Holy One of Israel, Redeemer, God of the whole earth — pile up like a dossier of divine credentials, grounding the marriage claim in comprehensive cosmic and covenantal authority. Paul draws on the husband-Christ imagery of Isaiah 54 and Ezekiel 16 in Ephesians 5:25–27, where Christ's love for the church is the pattern for husbands — completing the typological trajectory from divine husband to incarnate bridegroom.
