Study Note

Jesus's promise of 'water welling up to eternal life' to the Samaritan woman draws on the water-of-life imagery of Isaiah 44:3; 55:1 and Ezekiel 47 to describe the eschatological gift of the Spirit (identified explicitly in John 7:39). The contrast with Jacob's well — which requires returning to be refilled — establishes the superiority of the gift Jesus offers: the well of living water becomes an internal spring, not an external source. The woman's misunderstanding ('so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water,' verse 15) is characteristically Johannine: literal misunderstanding becomes the vehicle for deeper spiritual instruction. Revelation 21:6 and 22:17 close the biblical canon with the same invitation: 'let the one who is thirsty come, let the one who desires take the water of life without price.'
