Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for nought? neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith the Lord of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand.

Study Note

God's stunning declaration — 'who is there even among you that would shut the doors for nought? neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, says the Lord of hosts' — expresses divine displeasure with worthless worship in the strongest possible terms. The offer to shut the Temple doors rather than continue with empty ritual reveals that God prefers the cessation of hypocritical worship over its continuation — a position that subverts the assumption that any worship is better than none. Isaiah 1:11-15 and Amos 5:21-24 share this prophetic conviction that unethical worship is an insult, not an offering. The verse prepared the way for the New Testament's critique of Temple worship divorced from covenant obedience and anticipates Jesus' cleansing of the Temple as a prophetic sign.
