Study Note

'Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.' Matthew explicitly translates Emmanuel to make the theological point: the promised child is the embodiment of divine presence — the same presence Israel sought through ark, temple, and festival. Matthew's Gospel opens with 'God with us' (1:23) and closes with 'I am with you alway' (28:20), creating an inclusio of divine presence around the entire narrative. The virgin birth, grounded in Isaiah 7:14's LXX rendering, signals that this child enters history through divine initiative rather than ordinary human generation — a new creation in the womb.
