Alvah

Patriarchs (Abraham–Joseph) Edom · H5933
Old Testament

Alvah was an Edomite chief, a descendant of Esau through his son Eliphaz.

Alvah was an Edomite chief (Hebrew: 'alluf'), a descendant of Esau through his son Eliphaz, listed in the catalogue of Edomite chiefs that concluded the Esau-Edom narrative in Genesis 36:40. The chiefs listed here may represent a later administrative list of Edomite tribal leaders from the settlement period, distinct from the earlier genealogical lists. In some manuscripts and the parallel 1 Chronicles 1:51 passage the name appears as Aliah. The Edomites occupied the Seir highlands southeast of the Dead Sea and maintained their distinct identity as a nation related to but separate from Israel throughout the Old Testament period.
