Bar-Jesus, also known as Elymas, was a Jewish sorcerer who tried to hinder Paul and Barnabas' ministry.
Bar-Jesus (son of Jesus), also called Elymas the sorcerer, was a Jewish false prophet attached to the court of Sergius Paulus, the Roman proconsul of Cyprus (Acts 13:6–12). When Paul and Barnabas arrived in Paphos and began speaking with the proconsul, Bar-Jesus actively opposed their message and tried to turn the official away from the faith. Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, rebuked him and declared a temporary blindness upon him—a judgment that led the proconsul to believe, astonished at the teaching of the Lord.
