Gedaliah

Old Testament

Gedaliah, a son of Jeduthun, was one of the temple musicians appointed by King David to prophesy with lyres, harps, and cymbals.

Gedaliah son of Ahikam was appointed by Nebuchadnezzar as governor of the remnant population left in Judah after the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC (2 Kings 25:22–26; Jeremiah 40–41). He governed from Mizpah and urged the remaining people to settle, farm, and submit to Babylon, promising that stability and life were possible under Babylonian oversight. When warned by Johanan that Ishmael son of Netaniah intended to assassinate him, Gedaliah refused to believe it. Ishmael murdered him along with his associates and the Babylonian soldiers present, triggering a panic that led the remaining community to flee to Egypt despite Jeremiah's prophetic warning against doing so. The Jewish fast of Gedaliah (third of Tishri) commemorates his death.
