Korah

Old Testament

Korah, son of Hebron, from the tribe of Judah.

Korah was a Levite of the Kohathite clan who led the most significant internal rebellion against Moses and Aaron's authority during the wilderness period (Numbers 16). Together with Dathan, Abiram, and two hundred fifty Israelite leaders, he accused Moses and Aaron of exalting themselves above the congregation: 'All in the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?' (Numbers 16:3). God's judgment came dramatically: the earth opened and swallowed Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and their households, while fire consumed the two hundred fifty men offering incense (Numbers 16:31–35). Jude 11 cites 'Korah's rebellion' as a paradigm of deadly defiance against divinely appointed authority.
