Old Testament

Maoch (or Maacah) was the father of Achish, king of Gath, to whom David fled.

Maoch (also called Maacah in 1 Kings 2:39) was the father of Achish, the Philistine king of Gath to whom David fled for refuge from King Saul (1 Samuel 27:2). Under Achish's protection, David lived in the Philistine city of Ziklag for sixteen months, raiding Israel's enemies while feigning loyalty to Achish. The variant name Maacah in Kings likely reflects a different manuscript tradition. Maoch is known only through this paternal connection to the king who sheltered Israel's future king.
