Old Testament

Moab, the son of Lot by his eldest daughter, was the ancestor of the Moabite people.

Moab was the son born to Lot by his elder daughter after the destruction of Sodom, conceived in the cave at Zoar when the daughters believed no men remained on earth (Genesis 19:37). He became the eponymous ancestor of the Moabites, the people who settled the plateau east of the Dead Sea. The Moabites maintained a complex relationship with Israel throughout the biblical period—as kinspeople through Lot, as employers of Balaam against Israel (Numbers 22–24), as the homeland from which Ruth came to Israel, and as frequent military adversaries. The Mosaic law excluded Moabites from the assembly of the LORD to the tenth generation (Deuteronomy 23:3).
