Nebat

United Kingdom Israel · H5028
Old Testament

Nebat was the father of Jeroboam I, who became the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel after the division of the monarchy.

Nebat was an Ephraimite from Zeredah and the father of Jeroboam I, the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel (1 Kings 11:26). His name appears repeatedly in the formulaic phrase 'Jeroboam son of Nebat who made Israel to sin,' which the Deuteronomistic historian uses as a standard of condemnation for the northern kings who maintained Jeroboam's golden calf cult at Bethel and Dan. Nebat himself is mentioned only through his paternal relationship to Jeroboam; his wife's name was Zeruah, a widow according to the text.
