Old Testament

The Nephushesim (or Nephisim) were a family of temple servants who returned to Jerusalem from Babylonian captivity.

The Nephushesim, also written Nephisim or Nephussim, were a family of temple servants whose descendants returned to Judah from the Babylonian exile under Zerubbabel (Ezra 2:50; Nehemiah 7:52). The textual variation between Nephushesim and Nephisim in the parallel lists reflects minor scribal differences in the transmission of the register. Temple servants performed support roles in the Jerusalem sanctuary and constituted a distinct hereditary class within the post-exilic community.
