New Testament

Nicanor was one of the seven men chosen to assist the apostles in the early Jerusalem church.

Nicanor was one of the seven men of good repute, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, chosen by the Jerusalem church to oversee the daily distribution of food to the Hellenistic Jewish widows who had been neglected (Acts 6:5). This appointment freed the apostles to devote themselves to prayer and the ministry of the word. His Greek name indicates he was likely a Hellenistic Jew, as were the other six selected for this ministry. He appears only in this single passage.
