Puah, one of the two Hebrew midwives, along with Shiphrah, who defied Pharaoh's order to kill male Hebrew babies.
Puah was one of the two Hebrew midwives—along with Shiphrah—who feared God and refused to carry out Pharaoh's order to kill every male Hebrew infant at birth (Exodus 1:15–21). When confronted by Pharaoh, they claimed that Hebrew women gave birth too quickly for the midwives to arrive in time. Because of their civil disobedience grounded in the fear of God, the text records that God dealt well with them and gave them families of their own. Their act of conscience stands as one of the earliest examples of righteous resistance to unjust authority in the biblical record.
