Shem

Patriarchs (Abraham–Joseph) Early Patriarch · H8035
Old Testament

Shem, one of Noah's three sons and the ancestor of the Semitic peoples.

Shem was the eldest son of Noah and the ancestor of the Semitic peoples, including the Hebrews, Arameans, Arabs, Assyrians, and Babylonians, whose genealogical line is traced in Genesis 10:21–31 and 11:10–26. He was honored by Noah's blessing—'Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem' (Genesis 9:26)—distinguishing his line as that through which covenant relationship with God would descend to Abraham and ultimately to Jesus Christ (Luke 3:36).
