The doxology of Romans concludes with reference to the 'mystery that was kept secret for long ages but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith.' This verse ties together Paul's understanding of salvation history: what was hidden is now revealed, the nations are the target audience, and 'obedience of faith' (the phrase that brackets the entire letter at 1:5 and 16:26) is the intended outcome. The term 'mystery' (musterion) in Paul is not something irrational but something hidden in the divine purpose and now disclosed through the gospel — the inclusion of Gentiles on equal terms with Jews (Ephesians 3:6). The verse confirms that the gospel is not an innovation but the unfolding of a long-concealed divine plan now made universally accessible.
