Study Note

'To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life' — Paul promises eschatological reward to those who persistently pursue virtue as they seek God, even before he has named Jesus. This verse is critical evidence in debates about whether Paul acknowledges the possibility of salvation outside explicit faith in Christ: its pairing with verse 6 ('who will render to every man according to his deeds') suggests a principle of judgment by works that sits alongside, not against, his justification-by-faith teaching. Most Reformed interpreters see the verse as describing the character of those whom God justifies, rather than an alternative path to life.
