What is passed down from one generation to the next, both material and spiritual. God promised Abraham's descendants the land of Canaan as an inheritance (Genesis 15:7-21). Each tribe received its portion (Joshua 13-21), while Levites inherited God himself (Numbers 18:20). The New Testament transforms the concept: believers are 'heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ' (Romans 8:17). First Peter 1:3-4 speaks of 'an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade — kept in heaven for you.' Ephesians 1:14 identifies the Holy Spirit as the 'deposit guaranteeing our inheritance.' The ultimate inheritance is eternal life in God's renewed creation.
