Study Note

'Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful' — the steward (oikonomos) metaphor presents apostolic ministry as management of another's property rather than ownership, fundamentally reframing success away from popularity or rhetorical power toward faithfulness to the entrusted message. Paul's application in verses 3–5 is radical: human or even self-assessment is insufficient — 'He that judgeth me is the Lord' — and final vindication awaits the eschatological revelation. The principle extends beyond apostleship to all forms of Christian vocation: the standard of faithfulness subordinates visible results to alignment with the master's will, drawing on the Parable of the Talents tradition (Matthew 25:21).
