Study Note

The exhortation to maintain 'a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ' turns social shame against itself: the accusers' false charges will eventually become the source of their own shame when the quality of Christian conduct is evident. The Greek 'syneidsēsin agathēn' (good conscience) appears in 1 Peter also at 3:21 (baptism as 'the answer of a good conscience toward God') and in the Pastoral Epistles, indicating a distinctively early Christian ethical concept of integrated moral-spiritual consciousness. The rhetorical strategy of 2:12 is here repeated: observable conduct under persecution is the church's most effective apologetic, not philosophical argument. This verse grounded early Christian martyr theology, where the calm dignity of those facing death was itself read as divine testimony.
