Study Note

'For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.' The false security of 'peace and safety' (eirēnē kai asphaleia) was likely the political slogan of the Pax Romana — the imperial promise of order and stability. Against this backdrop, Paul declares that the day of the Lord will arrive like labor pains: unexpected, irresistible, and inescapable. Jeremiah 6:14's 'they have healed the wound of my people lightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace' and Ezekiel 13:10's false prophets provide the Old Testament antecedents for this critique of comfortable complacency.
