Study Note

'Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy.' Paul's counsel to the wealthy recalibrates identity and security: the problem is not wealth itself but the pride and misplaced trust it generates. The phrase 'uncertain riches' (adelotēti ploutou — the uncertainty of wealth) is a remarkable description: money is inherently insecure by nature. Contrasted with the 'living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy,' the verse insists on genuine enjoyment of material goods — not asceticism — but grounded in the Giver rather than the gift. Jesus's Sermon on the Mount ('Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth') addresses the same attachment from a different angle.
