Study Note

Paul's declaration that apostles are 'ambassadors for Christ' (hyper Christou oun presbeuomen) employs a term from Hellenistic diplomacy: a presbeutēs was the official envoy of a sovereign. The strikingly passive construction — 'as though God were making his appeal through us' — subordinates the apostle's authority entirely to divine initiative, countering any notion that Paul's preaching carries independent human authority. The imperative 'be reconciled to God' is addressed, within the letter, to the Corinthians themselves, suggesting Paul sees ongoing relational repair as necessary even within the church. This verse is central to Pauline missiology and to the theology of reconciliation developed in 2 Corinthians 5:14–21, one of the densest christological passages in the New Testament.
