Study Note

The designation of the prophetic word as 'a more sure word of prophecy' (bebaioteron ton prophētikon logon) — more certain even than the auditory experience of the Transfiguration — presents written Scripture as a surer epistemic foundation than visionary experience. The metaphor of a 'light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts' presents Scripture as provisional torch-light sufficient for the present age, awaiting the full luminosity of eschatological consummation. The phrase 'until the day dawn' (heōs hou hēmera diaugasē) creates the tension of partial versus full knowledge that Paul develops in 1 Corinthians 13:12 ('now we see in a mirror darkly; but then face to face'). This verse became the primary Petrine text for the Protestant doctrine of the sufficiency of Scripture and the subordination of private spiritual experience to the public canonical word.

And we have more firm the prophetic word, to which we do well giving heed, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, till day may dawn, and a morning star may arise--in your hearts;

And so the words of the prophets are made more certain; and it is well for you to give attention to them as to a light shining in a dark place, till the dawn comes and the morning star is seen in your hearts;
